An old co-worker once told me how he would roast coffee while he was
camping in a pan over an open flame. So of course, I decided to buy some
green coffee beans, and roast them myself! It wasn’t over an open flame
while I was camping; Nope, it was in a skillet on my stove in my house.
This was March 22nd, 2016.
UP IN SMOKE
I smoked up the entire house; set off the smoke alarm, and really pissed
off my wife. We had to open all the windows while it was only 30
degrees outside and practically evacuate, but boy was it worth it! Not
because it taste good; quite the contrary... It was shit. Bitter,
charred, even vegetal. The roast was incredibly uneven. But i learned a
lesson that day... don’t roast coffee on a skillet in the stove. So my
second roast, I used a highwall pot on the stove... pissed my wife off
again because it was still smokey, but the roast turned out a bit better
than the last one; it was still kind of gross though. Weak - no flavor.
This wasn’t going to be easy, but there was progress.
WHAT'S COOKING?
I won a small sales competition at work and got a $200 gift card. I used it to buy a gas grille. I threw a little wire drum on it, and put a spit through it. I actuated the drum with a handheld drill, fired up the grille, and off I went! This time, the coffee was actually good! I’ve had better... but the first real progress. I was learning my timing & managing my temperatures. This was drinkable!
I’ve learned a lot over the past 8 years roasting coffee. Learning to craft roasted coffee by sight and sound. Fast forward to 2020. COVID. We were all stuck at home, bored to death... I decided to start roasting coffee again. I developed a fantastic blend that is now known as my quarantine blend. I used that same grill through may of 2024 (with some improvements).Ii had a great run selling to friends and family with different blends & origins. but now, I think it’s time to grow up. Let's grow up together!
